Version 2: NE/24 A: 20 days Nagaland Mountain Biking Tour with Short Treks ( Includes Mon)

This tour is designed as a mountain biking exploration of tribal habitat of Zailangrong, Kuki, Angami, Sangtam, Yimchunger, Khiamniungans, Sumi, Chang, phom and Konyak tribes.

Nagaland offers one of the best mountain biking routes in North East India. Moderate elevation, not very steep, comparatively less traffic, good mountain scenery, hospitable people and ancient tribal culture.

The tour starts from Dimapur and takes us to Peren to start our south West to North East cycling traverse through Nagaland to Mon. Finally we end up amongst the tea gardens of Dibrugarh in Assam. Some short treks and driving sections are included. The tour is fully supported with back up vehicle.

ITENERIES

Day 1. Arrive Dimapur

Arrive Dimapur Airport from Kolkata, or travel by road from Kaziranga, Assam. Upon arrival met by your Naga Guide, and take a 14 Kms car trip to Diezephe visiting the Craft village. Explore the village, meet the local craftsmen at work. Back to your hotel, to set up your mountasin bikes for the tour. Overnight Hotel.

Day 2. Drive cum bike Dimapur, 260 m to Peren, 1445 m. (60 Kms)

Drive cum bike to Peren, located close to the trijunction of Assam, Manipur and Nagaland. We will be ascending from 260 m to 1445 m, along a 84 kms mountain road. Biking distance is 60 Kms. Peren is the headquarters of the Zeliangrong and Kuki tribes. Upon arrival we shall be greeted and entertained to a cultural program. Overnight at Home stay / tents.

Day 3. Bike Peren to Benreu, 1950 m. (27 km)

   

Bike to Benreu village, Enroute stop at Pelekie village to see the traditional way of making salt. Resume biking to Benreu.
Upon arrival explore the village. See morung, (boys dormitory), visit some houses which are decorated with hunting trophies. Witness some indigenous games. Overnight Community Cottages.

Day 4. Trek Benreu – Mt. Pauna, 2460m. – Benreu

Day trek to Mt. Pauna, 2460 m. Likely to see wildlife, birds, herbal plants, and more, as Mt. Pauna is regarded as a nature museum. Enjoy the bounty of nature, picnic lunch. Trek back to Benreu village. Evening: Join a bonfire in one of the morung with locals where you will be served local brew.
Overnight at Community Cottages.

Day 5. Bike Benreu – Dzuleke – Khonoma (40 km.)

Bike to Khonoma. Stop at Dzuleke village, in a forest setting. Enjoy a traditional lunch. with a local family. As we bike we can see Mithun- the state animal leisurely grazing. Closer to Khonoma a chance to see the panorama of rice paddy fields cut in terraces leading to deep valleys. Overnight. Khonoma Home Stay.

Day 6. Trek Khonoma – Dzukou

Trek 08 kms to Dzukou valley via Siekhakie. Dzukue is located at an altitude of 2438 m Its Emerald green rolling hills are a visual delight.

The valley is fully covered with tough bamboo brush which from afar looks like a mown lawn. Serpentine streams flow through the valley.

In spring time, endemic species of rhododendrons bloom. Summer and monsoons are the time when hundreds of wild flowers bloom. Overnight at Dzukou in camp.

Day 7. Dzukou- Khonoma (8 km)

The return trek to Khonoma is through Huparathi and Dihujhu, we can expect to see or hear the Byths Tragopan the State bird.

In the evening we shall be entertained by some indigenous games kene, and be served local brew. Overnight. Khonoma. Home Stay.

Day 8. Explore Khonoma and bike to Kohima (20 km)

   

Morning we shall explore the village. On our village tour we shall come across ceremonial gates, age group houses, forts, cairn circle, meet local craftsmen- cane basket making, weaving etc.

Thereafter, we shall bike to Kohima (20km) we shall visit the State Museum, local market, war cemetery and more. Overnight. Kohima. Hotel.

Day 9. Kohima: Biking trip to Southern Angami tribal villages

We shall bike for more than 60km around Southern Angami villages like Viswema, Jakhma, Kigwema and Kisama. Peep into life style of the Angami Nagas. Overnight. Kohima. Hotel.

Day 10. Bike Kohima- Tuophema (62 km).

Bike to Tuophema village, enroute we stop at Nachama village to explore the village, and meet a family. Continue biking to Tuophema. We shall tour the village and in the evening the locals will perform cultural items .Overnight. Tuophema Community Cottage.

Day 11. Bike Tuophema – Wokha – Riphim village (55km)

We shall bike towards Wokha the headquarter of the Lotha Naga.

On the way we shall stop at Tseminyu village (Rengma Nagas), and Tsunglikha village Next explore Longsa Village (Lotha Naga) Continue biking to Riphim village. In the evening participate in a cultural program. Overnight Riphim Tourist Hut.

Day 12. Riphim: Day biking cum walking trip to surrounding villages

Bike and walk to Riphim village, Chungsu village, and Doyang hydro project. In the evening enloy a bonfire with the villagers. Overnight. Riphim. Tourist Hut.

Day 13. Bike Riphim – Longkhum (65km)

Bike to Longkhum village, which was known as the vanguard of the Ao Nagas during the head hunting days. Overnight. Longkhum. Home Stay.

Day 14. Bike Longkhum – Ungma – Mokukchung – Moponchuket (37km)

Bike to Ungma village, witness craft making, Meet old tattooed women, interact with them, have tea in their house. Continue biking to Mokokchung, the headquarters of the Ao Nagas, Visit the local market, and a privatly owned museum.

At Moponchuket village, explore the village visit the village library and village mini museum, see the wooden pillars which tells a general life cycle of the Ao people.

Evening there will be local youths performing cultural presentation. Overnight. Moponchuket. Community Cottage.

Day 15. Bike Moponchuket – Chuchuyimlang (35 Kms)

Morning 3 kms nature walk to Chami village. Latter bike to Chuchuyimlang village Explore the village Evening a cultural presentation. Overnight. Chuchuyimlang. Tourist Hut/Home Stay.

Day 16. Drive Chuchuyimlang – Dibrugarh

Early morning drive to Dibrugarh to connect flight.

Day 15 : Drive Mopungchuket – Tuensang

Drive 107 Kms to reach Tuensang (1371 mt). home of the Chang Nagas. Enroute visit Longkhim Village (Sangtam Tribe) and some tribal houses.

Day 16 : Drive cum bike Tuensang – Mon

  

Drive Tuensang to Mon.(8-9 hrs due to rough road conditions). Enroute biking on forest road. At Mon Overnight at Govt guest house.

Mon -,The land of the Konyaks; well known for being former head hunters, it retains some of its traditional heritage.

It offers a good opportunity for finding semi-traditional villages and tattooed warriors in loincloths. The main attraction in Mon is the remote geographical location, and the chance it affords to get a glimpse tribal life style.

Day 17 : Mon: exploration of Konayak tribal villages

Biking trip to visit Konayak tribal villages of Mon, Chui, and Shangyu. Peep into lifestyles , see artisans and handicrafts and meet people. Overnight at Govt Guest house.

Day 18: Mon: Driving Trip to Shangnyu and Longwa

  

Drive to Longwa Village ( Konyak tribe) located astride the Indo- Myanmar border. It is a difficult drive on a bad road and involves fording a river enroute

at Longwa visit Angh’s house, explore the village and meet the locals.

The Angh’s house is bisected longitudinally by the border. Those sitting near the hearth will have half their body in Myanmar and the other half still in India. The Angh also has dozens of wives! And it is filled with trophies of various animal skulls. Return to Mon for Overnight at Government Guest house.

Day 19 : Mon – Dibrugarh

Biking trip to visit Konayak tribal villages of Mon, Chui, and Shangyu. Peep into lifestyles , see artisans and handicrafts and meet people. Overnight at Govt Guest house.

Day 20 : Departure from Dibrugarh

Transfer from hotel to the airport, for your departure. Fly from Mohanbari Airport to Kolkata, Guwahati or New Delhi.
