This trek climbs steeply from the road head at Dotery, 2700 m, for three days to reach the Sandakphu –Phalut ridge at an altitude of 3600 m. Passing through the lovely forests of the Singelila National Park, it take in the spectacular sunrise view from Tonglu ridge, and the breathtaking views of the Khandchendzonga Range , the peaks of the Mount Everest group , and also views of Chola Range with the passes leading into Tibet.

The trek from Sandakphu to Phalut is along the undulating 3500 m high ridge passing through meadows, forests full of wild flowers and Himalayan flora, with the mighty peaks towering in the background. The descent to the road head at Rimbik through the Rammam River Valley, with its gurgling streams and diverse flowering flora is a visual delight.

The knee wobbling descent to the road head at Rimbik is through forests with flora, flowers and mountain streams.
There are 3 versions of this trek

  • Standard version: 05 days trek.
  • Version 01: Designed for trekkers in a hurry. The 4 day version is suitable for fit and experienced trekkers.
  • Version 02: 03 days trek is for trekkers in a tearing hurry. They must however be experienced and fit, willing to take up a challenge and aware of risks involve in relation to high altitude health hazards.

All trek tours starts and ends at Darjeeling . Pick up from Bagdogra, Kalimpong or locations in Sikkim can be arranged with overnight stop at Dotery, on request.

 

ITENERIES

Day 01: Darjeeling -Maneybhanjan, 2134m- Dhotery, 2700 m-Trek to Tumling, 30000m

   

After an early breakfast, at Darjeeling, set off by jeep, on a 21 kms, 1.30 hrs drive through the Himalayan foothills to Maneybhanjan . To get to the start point of our trek, We will continue our drive for another 19 kms from Manaybhanjan, to the lovely little village of Dhotrey at 2700 m.

From Dhotery to Tumling , the walking trail is a moderate steady climb from 2700 m to 3000 m in 07 kms traversing through a deep forest of Rhododendrons and Magnolias. The surrounding forest is a birders delight . Rare and exotic species like the scarlet minivet, kalij pheasant, blood pheasant, satyr tragopan, parrotbills, and fire-tailed myzornis can be spotted. The mammals that could be seen are the red panda, leopard cat, yellow-throated marten, barking deer, wild boar, and others.

    

Red pandas reared at the Darjeeling zoo were reintroduced into the wild at the national park. Rajesh Bedi and Naresh Bedi made a documentary on it called Cherub of the Mist that went on to win some awards. There are many varieties of orchids and diverse flora in the forest, which explains the heady fragrance that hangs in the air.

Today being your first trekking day you will feel the strain on your climbing muscles and lungs. Easy pace over the 7 kms trail, will enable you to complete the days trekking in 4-5 hrs. You may be able to witness a pleasing sunset.

You will stay overnight at Tumling in a comfortable private lodge, or at the trekkers hut at Tonglu.

Day 02: Trek Tumling – Garibas,2621 m- Kal pokhri, 3108 m

Rise early for a sunrise view from Tonglu Ridge view point. Weather permitting you will get a fabulous view of both the Singalila and Chola Ranges. Mount Chomalhari in Bhutan is also visible.

Return to Tumling for breakfast. After breakfast, take the trail through the Singalila National Park. Mature forests, cascading streams and wild flowers, are a delight to the senses. A leisurely downhill walk of just 06 kms will bring you to Garibas in just 02 hrs. Thereafter the track climbs steeply for 2.5 Kms to the hamlet of Kayakata. In 1.30 – 02 hrs. Another 03 Kms of gradual ascent brings us to Kalpokhri ( The Black Lake) in 01 hr. of easy trekking. Overnight at comfortable private lodge.

Day 03: Kal Pokhri, 3108 Mtrs – Sandakphu, 3636 Mtrs.

       

Today is a hard days trekking It is quite a steep climb to Sandakphu and you are no doubt likely to feel the effects of the thinner air as you climb over 3000 meters for the first time. However, there is plenty to distract the mind, as you are rewarded with remarkable panoramic views of some of the peaks of Sikkim and eastern Nepal. The very steep 6 kms trek will take 03-04 hrs.

If the weather is clear, there are remarkable sunset and sunrise views from Sandakphu, of Everest, Makalu, and Khangchendzonga. Overnight at comfortable private Lodge.

Day 04: Sandakphu, 3636m – Srikhola, 1800m

  

Awake early for breathtaking sunrise views of the great peaks. Weather permitting Khangchendzonga, Makalu, Everest, Lhotse and the other, lesser peaks of Sikkim and eastern Nepal. are on view.

After breakfast trek down through deep forests to the bottom of the valley and scenic Srikhola – a mountain stream. It is a very steep knee wobbling descent for 13.5 Kms, and will take 05- 06 hours. Tonight you will stay at another private lodge or at trekkers hut.

Day 05: Srikhola, 1800m – Rimbik, 2286m – Darjeeling

After breakfast you will continue the trek to Rimbik – a picturesque mountain village. You ascent gradually, to 2286m. on a 5.5 Kms long trail. The last days trek will take about 02-03 hrs.

Upon arrival transfer to your jeep for the 68 Kms, 4.30 hrs, drive back to Darjeeling.

Itinerary for Version 1: 04 days Sandakphu trek

This is a Strenuous trek requiring endurance, as you get up to Sandakphu in two trekking days instead of three. You also miss the views from Tonglu Ridge and you are exposed to high altitude health hazards . Only advised for fit trekkers who have experience of high altitude trekking.

Trek Summary

This trek climbs steeply from the road head at Dhotery at 2220 m, for two days to reach the Sandakphu –Phalut ridge at an altitude of 3600 m. Enroute there are the lovely forests of the Singelila National Park, and the view point of Tonglu. From Sandakphu there are breathtaking views of the Khandchendzonga Range towering over a basin of silver firs and Rhododendrons, in the foreground.

In the West the peaks of the Mount Everest group are visible, whilst on the East lie the Chola Range with views of passes leading into Tibet. The knee wobbling 06 hrs descent to Srikhola is followed by a 02 hrs steady climb to the road head at Rimbik . You will see forests with flora, flowers and mountain streams. Trek 7 kms to Tumling. Continue to Garibas through Singalila NP. Overnight at Garibas.

Day 02: Trek Garibas, 2621 m- Kal pokhri, 3108 m- Sandakphu, 3636 m

Trek to Kalpokhri 5.5 kms in 3 hrs. Continue to Sandakphu . steep climb at altitude . 6 kms in 3-4 hrs. Overnight at Sandakphu.

Day 03: Sandakphu, 3636m – Srikhola, 1800m

Sunrise views for Khangchendzonga and everest group.
Steep 13.5 kms knee wobbling descent, through deep forests to the bottom of the valley in 05- 06 hours. Overnight at sri Khola.

Day 05: Srikhola, 1800m – Rimbik, 2286m – Darjeeling

Continue the trek to Rimbik It is a gradual ascent, to 2286m. on a 5.5 Kms long trail. The last days trek will take about 02-03 hrs.

Upon arrival transfer to your jeep for the 68 Kms, 4.30 hrs, drive back to Darjeeling.

Itinerary for Version 2: 03 days Sandakphu trek

This is a challenging trek requiring endurance, for long hours of strenuous trekking. You also miss the views from Tonglu Ridge and you are exposed to high altitude health hazards . Advised only for fit trekkers who have experience of high altitude trekking, and are looking for a challenge. Avoid this trek if you have knee problems.

Steep 13.5 kms knee wobbling descent, through deep forests to the bottom of the valley in 05- 06 hours. Continue trekking for another 2-3 hrs to Rimbik. Ascending to 2286m. in 5.5 Kms. Drive to Darjeeling. 68 Kms in 4.30 hrs.
