This biking circuit is located in the Doars foot hills and the Kalimpong Mountain region. The terrain comprises Rolling foothills covered with tea gardens, reserved forests, river Valleys, ethnic hamlets, small towns, with exotic bazaars, Buddhist Gompas and monasteries, and mountain terrain covered with forests and terraced cultivation. Away from crowds, it is composed of roads and trails, around picture post card countryside, framed by the panorama of snowcaps dominated by the mighty Khangchendzonga.

This is ideal countryside for mountain biking, and one of the few circuits in the Doars- Sikkim-Darjeeling Hills, which has nature trails with negligible traffic. We have selected undulating black topped roads, steep ascents through a series of hair pin bends, forest trails with rough stony surface, to give you a true Himalayan mountain biking experience. Short treks have been included to enable you to explore the hidden countryside.

For your overnights, we have selected a range of lodgings comprising home stays, heritage tea bungalows, village inn, and the atmospheric Samthar Farm House. Throughout the tour there is a chance to interact with the friendly population, and memorable photo opportunities. Whether it is on the trail, or at halts, we provide hospitality in the Indian traditions, with a variety of meals and refreshments.


Day 01: Arrive Bagdogra and transfer to Samsing, 600 m by car.

Drive 74 Kms, in 3 hrs, along a National Highway, passing Mahananda Wild life sanctuary and the Doars tea growing region to the village of Samsing; which is tucked away in a picture post card valley. Overnight at a comfortable homestay.

Day 02: Cycling 24 Kms from Samsing, 600 m to Gorubathan, 417 m.


Early Morning : There is time to set up your bikes, and prepare for the cycling. The energetic can take an hour’s walk with your guide into the countryside. Enjoy the scenic beauty of forests, rivers and ethnic hamlets. Return to the house for breakfast.

Late morning start. Ride through reserved forests, with a sprinkling of forest villages in the Valley of the Neora River. The first 11 Kms is a undulating descent. upto the Neora river bridge, 400 m.. Thereafter take a 12 Kms ride on a forest trail through the heart of the forest, to reach the Gorubathan Highway. Here you will divert 3 kms for overnight at a Tea Estate Bungalow of the colonial era. Breathtaking views of tea bush covered slopes, the distant mountains and the plains of the Dooars. Day 03: Cycling 34 Kms from Gurubathan, 417 m to Lava, 2138 m. 34 Kms


A challenging day with an ascent of 1721 m, over a distance of 34 Kms. The ride is along a well maintained tarmac road with good surface. It is a scenic ride ascending, through a series of hairpin bends with easy gradient to Lava with breathtaking look back views of the plains. The road has light traffic. Vegetation is Wet Alpine with bio diverse forests, and tea plantations on the lower slopes.

Lava, is a small bazaar and village, at an altitude of 2100 m amidst forested hills famous for its Buddhist Monastery. Check in at a small family run hotel. In the evening visit the monastery at prayer time and explore the local bazaar. Overnight at your hotel.

Day 04: Cycling 49 Kms from Lava, 2138 m to Samthar, 1400 m.


Another challenging day, as you cycle for 49 Kms descending from 2138 m to 1280 m- with one sharp ascent enroute.
The road is single lane degraded black top, and portions are rough stone surface, with occasional pot holes. Throughout the ride is through deep forests. The population is sparse with few small villages. The ride terminates in the Samthar Valley; which has a greater density of population with open spaces and terraced cultivation. The traffic is light to negligible. At Samthar check in at the Samthar Farm House – an old Lepcha house built of stone and timber, converted for comfortable living, whilst maintaining its ambience. set up to provide hospitality skills and earning to the local community and to support the Awake & Shine primary school.

Scenic, tranquil and remote, the Samthar Valley, is located at an average elevation of 1400 Meters. The inhabitants are a blend of various ethnic groups-Lepchas, Bhutias and Nepali. It is an ideal place to peep into lifestyles of this fascinating hill community. It also has diverse flora, well-developed mountain agriculture, forests, river valleys, and offers one of the finest views of Mount Khangchendzonga and the panorama of snows .Overnight at the Samthar Farm House.

Day 05: Samthar Farm House: Trekking and cycling trip


Morning: Take a 4 hrs Nature and culture trek in the Samthar valley, and visit Awake & Shine School.
Afternoon: 16 Kms ,cycling trip in 03 hrs to Ponbu and back. The cycling is along a newly constructed paved road. It follows a ridge line with gradual ascents and descents. Change of elevation is never more than 100 m. Ponbu has panoramic views of the Teesta and Lish river valley, and brilliant sunset views on the snows.
Overnight, at the Samthar Farm house.

Day 06: Samthar Farm House – Kalimpong

Cycling 24 Kms to the Rilli river bridge The road is along a single lane black top except for the first 10 Kms which is degraded black top and stony surface. The scenery and views are spectacular, with forest and river valleys and broadside view of Kalimpong town and snow ranges ( in clear weather) . The area is sparsely populated and traffic on road is light to negligible. At the Rilli River transfer to car to drive to Kalimpong 10 Kms in 45 minutes.

In the evening walking exploration of fascinating bazaar, and short sightseeing tour. Overnight at hotel/homestay
